UPDATED: Cold Weather Typically Brings Me A Cold

That’s right once again Mother Nature has NO IDEA what she wants to do here in the Northeast. Rainy and freezing one day, and high in the mid 70′s the next. Make up your mind woman, my sinuses can’t take much more of this. That and everyone and their brother seems to have something be it cold, strep throat, or something in between the two. I have this to say about that: KEEP IT TO YOURSELF!!

Huh?

So there I was sitting in the tea shop just this morning looking through the three samples I had brought with me from WTE  - trying to figure out which to review. When it hit me like a cold gust of wind (turns out someone left the back windows open). The answer was almost staring me in the face in the form of a blend from Tiesta Tea.

Now before I go on a little about Tiesta Tea. I met these guys at World Tea East and I have to say they were a lot of fun. Young and fresh faces here in the tea world.

One of their handouts from the event read:

“Reinventing the world of tea with style & taste”

They are relatively new to the tea world (founded in 2010), they were still in college when the company formed! BUT these guys know where they want to go with their company and it would appear the sky’s the limit. They’ve already been awarded as a World Tea Expo Champion for 2011 for their innovative tea packaging tins. These tins have a thin UV window down the side so you can see your tea and of course see how much tea you have left to enjoy. I think that some amazing progress for such a young company.

I got the chance to speak to Dan Klein a bit about the product and I could tell from chatting with him (for the little time we had) that he was passionate about the product he was selling. This wasn’t just some job for him. I must also tell you all that it wasn’t until I took a look at my collection of business cards later that I realized Dan is also the CEO of Tiesta, sorry for not noticing that sooner Dan!

I went back to their booth on day two of WTE with Nicole and we had the chance to talk to talk to Patrick Tannous another founder of Tiesta Tea. He was really fun to chat with and up on his social networking – before we knew it Tiesta Tea was following us and we were following them.

But from what I know of how the younger generations communicate that’s how to have to be to get ahead in any business. Social Networking (Facebook, twitter, etc) is key and these guys really know how to put it to good use.

The company offers five of what they call (on their site) Karma Blends: Energizer, Forever Young, Immunity, Relaxer, and Slenderizer and each blend has at minimum 10 types of tea within that Karma Blend. Each of these blends are aimed at helping your body in one area or another.

So this morning I’m trying out one from the Immunity Karma Blend. Teas from the Immunity blends:

“Help your body recover from excess physical exertion and eliminate many of the toxins in your body.”

The sample I have is their Red Rose Rooibos a combination of rooibos, linden blossoms, rose petals, orange bits, and lemon bits.

Let me tell you the citrus was very predominant upon opening the pouch. So much so that I had to actually set it down and take a step back. That’s not to say I didn’t like the tea, it just really made me sit up and take notice of it.

As the tea steeped I took a few more sniffs to see what I would get this time. Well, I couldn’t place what it was, so I’m guessing the linden blossoms. But seeing as I’m not still clear on what it is linden blossoms are/taste like, I can’t say. Moving on, the first sip is in a word, interesting. I can’t pick out any one flavor in this tea which isn’t a bad thing at all. In fact it tells me the flavors all play nice with one another without one vying for my attention over the others. As I finish the cup I’m picking up a sweeter flavor which might be the rose petals or I might be way off base.

I had just enough for a second cup. This time I added in a little agave to see what it would do to the tea, if anything. Let me tell you a little kicked this tea up a notch in a big way. For me it seemed to amp up the flavors quite a bit and they really came alive. This time around I am noticing more of the rose petals, but it’s not really coming out on top. It just seems to be there with the occasional “hey here I am”.

Rating: 75/100 – I might pick some of this up at the start of cold and flu season. But it isn’t one I would have on hand all the time. Not because it was bad, I just seem to be moving away from  having flavored tea all the time. So rather than let it go bad I’d buy it to have in the season I’d use it most in (and use it up).

Where to buy: Tiesta Tea and in stores in and around the Chicago, IL area.

Cost: 2oz bag $6.00, 4oz bag $10, and 4oz tin $13

These guys are a company to watch and if you see something you like place an order from them.

Royal Tea of Kenya – Royal Breakfast Blend – UPDATED

On day two of World Tea East Nicole (AmazonV) and I were wandering the exhibit floor when she suggested we stop at a booth she hadn’t been to. I had to be honest I had yet to stop at this booth either. The booth was Royal Tea of Kenya and the woman we met was in a word amazing. Joy M. W’Njuguna represents over 550,000* tea farmers(!!) in Kenya. She shared with us her own story of how she entered into the tea business and you can read more about it from Joy here. Joy has an amazing story to tell and I am glad she shared it with me.

Her grandfather, as I found out, is also rather remarkable. He’s 110 (or 111) years old (he was born in 1901, but the month/date are unknown) and the oldest tea farmer in Kenya! I found that amazing to learn he has lived so long. Just imagine everything he’s seen in his many years. In fact he even has his own tea blend called Grandpa’s Anytime tea. I was able to sample some at WTE and it was very good. I only wish I had grabbed a sample of that now in order to try it again. (You can see the picture of Joy;s grandfather in this photo.)

Joy also told us how important her own father was in exporting coffee from Kenya and that we pretty much have him to thank for every cup of coffee we enjoy. Can you imagine being a part of this remarkable family? I can’t, but I can tell you after meeting Joy I’d love to meet her father and grandfather! Imagine what you could learn.

But the most amazing thing for me was hearing the passion and love of what she does hang on each word Joy shared about Royal Tea of Kenya. You know she truly cares about the farmers she represents and it isn’t just lip service. In fact Joy and I have exchanged a few emails over the last two weeks since the event and I hope they continue.

While I wasn’t able to bring back any of Grandpa’s Anytime Tea I did get a few samples of Royal Breakfast which was one of the teas Joy let me sample. I must also tell you that their teas are exported directly from small scale Kenyan farmers. They are processed at farmer owned facilities so you know you are getting the best.

It certainly is some of the best I’ve come across. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the smell of the dry tea. There is a lovely malty scent as well as a hint of sweetness, which Joy told me was honey! I had no idea that was possible but I love it.

So I set the kettle to 203 degrees, set the timer for four minutes I added the tea to my favorite infusion basket and placed that in my favorite mug. I really couldn’t wait for this to be ready. When the water was heated and I poured it over the leaves and the rich malty scent soon followed and the honey smell was a little more pronounced too. The smell was better than I remembered it.

Once the four minutes had passed I removed the basket and practically stuck my nose in the tea to get a good smell of the tea. It really smelled wonderful. I then added a splash (the tiniest of splashes) of silk milk (soy) to my cup as I was told a splash wouldn’t hurt and it didn’t, nor did it take anything away from the tea. Which was refreshing as sometimes any additive can change the taste quite a bit. At least that’s been my experience.

Now for my first sip….which was just as I remembered it rich, very smooth, bold, and yes with a yummy hint of honey. This is a beautiful breakfast tea that is perfect alone. But I imagine it would also go well with a very hearty breakfast depending on the mood you happen to be in. While I was drinking this I almost felt like I could see Kenya as described by Joy. It was a wonderful, quiet, and reflective moment in my kitchen.

When I sampled the tea at WTE with Joy I told her I could easily drink this every morning no problem. Now that I know I can get the tea from Joy’s Teaspoon you can bet I might just do that!

In all honesty I’d love to find a few teas I could have every day with the others being “mood” teas, you know for when I was in the mood to have them. In fact I’ve found that thanks to WTE I really prefer straight teas for my daily drinking to all the blends that are out there. Don’t get me wrong the blends are great….but my palate seems to be reversing for some reason and I’m really ok with that.
